Field & Forest Day Trip: May 20

Woman at the check-in table at Field & Forest: "Why did you think you could come out here without registering and buying a ticket in advance?"

Me: "Ummmm . . . because we're idiots?"

So we ended up paying $15 each to walk the trails and watch the action. Which was worth every penny. We learned a lot about the Field & Forest facility, which was the point of the trip in the first place. It's actually a pretty small property (or at least seemed that way). And nearly every vehicle out there arrived on a trailer. We met a crew that was thrilled to have us walk along beside their rigs as they bashed the bejesus out of them. They had a full trailer of tools, including welding equipment that they could deploy to the trail if needed. It was a fun couple of hours for us to hike around and watch the action. There were probably a dozen or so vehicles working the trails while we were there.

After that, we grabbed burgers and beers in Jaffrey and then managed to find one small Class VI loop to get our Jeeps muddy on. We then drove around to several different bookstores, auto parts stores and ourdoor equipment stores looking for a magical New Hampshire road atlas that might reveal some Class VI roads within a 2-hour drive of metrowest Boston. But we came up empty. No atlas.

All in, it was a great day! Finally got the rigs out of the driveway and into the woods!
