Personally, I'd like to see us change the rules a bit for places like Gretchen's, etc. How would you tell your insurance co that you "just rolled your Jeep, please fix it" anyway?
We can discuss this at the fall meeting and potentially vote on it...

My guess is it has more to do with personal injury liability. This could, of course, be solved with a simple waiver...I was actually surprised that we didn't have to sign one of those in the first place....

I've met a guy that has/had roll over coverage on his TJ. From my understanding though the insurance company told him it was a 1 time deal so he was waiting for that "I just totaled my rig kind of roll"

actually the membership form as well as roster sign in both are waivers of liability... how bullet proof they are is another matter... ;)

Insurance discussion is important to have, but probably should be in a separate thread.

My thoughts too. Figured I may as well go whole hog and build some stout axles.
ZAEDOCK wrote:Oh, need to pop the question...
what tires are you gonna run?
Thinking of 40-42's. Haven't decided on an brand or model yet.
Suggestions? Something good for playing on the rocks here on the east coast.
Someone has offered some Pitbull Rockers of the 41.5" flavor for it.
Congrats Kurt on going 60's and doing it right the first time.
On the tires I would recommend 39" reds, if your patient enough they will come up on Pirate & RC forums and you'll end up paying pretty much the same as a new set of PBR's or Intercos. If your not patient the PBR rocker is a great tire, only problem is they tend to be wiiiiidddddeeeeee!

Miguel - thank you for the pointers on possible tires to run.
Still haven't decided on which tires just yet. Needed to get my rear disc conversion done to determine which rim diameter I have to run.
The resulting dimater may narrow down which beadlocks and tires I can run.

Part - 2

Rear Disc Brake Conversion & Axle Shaft Install

More reading material and pictures for the web-wrenchers following along on this journey ;)

Tackled the next step of retrofitting the rear axle from it's poopy old drum brakes to spiffy disc brakes.

Basic step to it were:
- Remove the old brake drum from the rear hubs
- Remove the old brake backing plates & hardware
- Install disc brake adapters
- Install new brake discs on the the hubs
- Install new calipers and pads
- And of course give everything a coat of paint :)

First a shot of the old backing plates and decaying drum brake hardware :-o
Nasty!
Image

Yanked all old drum brake hardware & backing plates and gave the axle a coat of primer and a top coat.

Picked up a pair of disc brake adapter brackets from Ruffstuff.
Brackets installed on the rear axle.

Assembled the new brake discs onto the hubs and used the hydraulic press to install the 8 wheel studs in each asssembly to pin them together. Installed the hub/disc assembly onto the spindles and torqued the bearing retainer nuts to spec.
Image

After lubricating all the brake pins, o-rings, slides the calipers got installed and secured.

Overhead view of them assembled.
Too bad they will never be this clean again
Image

Last step for this evening was to install the 35 spline Yukon chromo shafts and seal them to the hubs.
Image

Hub studs torqued down.
Image

Done! :banana-guitar:
Kinda - holding off on installing the new diff cover until the axle truss for the 4 link gets welded on.
Image

The brake calipers used for the conversion were:
- 1984 Chevy K20 front disc calipers. I opted to used the JB7 version as it has a larger piston bore.
(More clamping pressure)
- Brake pads for the K20 also.

I've already installed a brake master cylinder from a Dodge 2500 for the added capacity needed for the 4 disc brakes.

Gotta wait until our last "big" run later this month before tearing into the YJ. :music-rockout:

No doubt about it 17". Its the rim size that gives you the most versatile tire selection on the market. I wouldn't go any other size even if the rims were given to me.

Did you drill out for the larger 9/16 studs to match the front or did you stay with the stock 1/2'-20? If you haven't purchased the rear brake hose I use a short one from a chevette part # H36847 $8

Looks good!
