Heavy duty spring?

So on the trail 5 hill climb I broke the drum on the 2000lb suckdown winch. I can upgrade to a superwinch but it may not be enough. Wondering if I can put a HD spring inline with the cable to soften the shock loads. No idea where I can find one however...

Check industrial supply places... I would expect you can find something online if you look around.

Maybe switch from steel cable to nylon cord?
It would have a bit of elasticity to reduce the shock loading on the winch drum...

Here is a unique (and very cool) way to mount a suck. The slight angle of the line also lessens the burden on the winch.

joe, that's actually how i mounted it! followed his instructions, and it worked like a charm.

i'm looking at nylon rope, but the diameter may be too large to easily run: http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-fibrous-cords/=i6bt0z
maybe i can just do a ~8" loop of rope and attached to the wire cable, and then run the wire cable through the pulley and onto the drum.

How much room (length) is there at full suck down between the pulley & the attachment point on the axle?

There's not a ton of length, but a short spring might work. That trip spring looks pretty good, any idea on the strength of one of those? As of now I'm using "docking line," which is supposed to have some stretch to it. 3/8 diameter double braided nylon rope at ~840lb work load limit (doubled up) so hopefully it will be stretchy enough and also act as a fuse. this pic is at full stuff on both sides. you can just see the edge of the pulley on the axle truss on the left.
