Damaged lug nuts?

I was cleaning the breaks this weekend and these were 3 of the lug nuts off the back driver side, the first one has 4 flat spots, the second has 2 flat spots, the third is just mangled one one side. The rim looks ok, I think, I’ve replaced them and ordered a matching set.

Would anyone have any ideas on how this would happen? I’ve never seen this before.

Look like wrong lug nuts. Is the seat the correct seat? Definetly seem to have been loose/ RIM moving under them.

I’m gonna have to look that up, these are the lug nuts that the shop sold me when they changed out the rims for me.

Looks like I have some homework to do.

I definitely had some trouble with the acorn style lug nuts that I bought, they loosened up, one two even went missing. I had put them on with an impact wrench and apparently that was not enough torque.

To much torque will actually make them loosen faster in certain instances. You stretch the threads on the studs.

After having a wheel come off while wheeling once, I learned how to torque em down properly. I use the impact to run em in, then actually use a torque wrench set to 85. No issues from then on.

I always use a torque wrench and you should too. I torque to 95 ft lbs and have never had a problem.

I think my problem was lack of torque, my cheepo impact wrench probably maxes out at about 75 ft lbs. I threw it out and went back to calibrated arm method

Sidebar, on the sub, we had some steam pipe bolts that needed 1200 ft lbs of torque...we had to call someone in that had hydraulics, there was no way to get there manually....insert joke here....haha

My ryobi impact is a ryobi, so even though it’s rated for 250 ftlbs, it delivers about 80. I break stuff loose manually before getting that on there. I try to avoid installing with the impact. But I’m just an untrained monkey with a hobby of wrenching.
