Another Wait Lister that has joined...
Hello all,
New to BSJ and the forum. Rolling in an entirely stock 2016 JK unlimited Willy's package. I may modify in time, but it is kinda fun to see what it'll do out of the box. It is my first Jeep, and I'm really looking forward to spending some time outdoors with all of you here. I will update my profile with a Jeep pic, but in the meantime, I have rolled very little off-road (Just whatever I could find over the last year). Thinking of maybe going with a winch sometime soon, but that seems kind of like a Christmas item. Any thoughts on steel vs. synthetic on them?
Its good to be here!
Jon

Welcome! Try to attend a Class 6 run, it’s a great introduction to getting off road. Synthetic rope for sure

Welcome!
The winch line type question is like tire size, there are discussion points on all sides, I'm sure people can chime in, but the best type is one that is installed and functional.
I'd urge you to start looking into protection of the undercarriage, skid plates as much as possible. Especially as a stock rig. Protect the investment!

Hey Jon. Welcome to the club! Take Dan's advice:
Start with the oil pan/transmission skid, if you cant do the whole set at once. Skid plates are not as sexy as a winch, but they definitely give you more BANG for your buck. By the way, steel for the skid plates and synthetic for the winch.I'd urge you to start looking into protection of the undercarriage, skid plates as much as possible. Especially as a stock rig. Protect the investment!

Welcome aboard...
Definitely try out one of the Clas IV runs.
And definitely Synthetic, safest way to go, and reduces the weight of the from Bumper/Winch combo by a lot...

stock is all good!!! However, realistically you will scrape and get stuck a lot on anything that is not a class 6 road - so a winch is key

Re: Another Wait Lister that has joined...
I’ve been running a stock 2020 Rubicon. The class VI are fun but when I push it on more difficult trails I have thoroughly thrashed the underside. Very thoroughly. Skids and synthetic rope are great advice. Im investing in protecting what i have and getting out of trouble first then adding things that will get me into deeper trouble. Been taking it easy since some 7-8s at the Maine Jamboree left me w some repairs.

Re: Another Wait Lister that has joined...
Broke off a few skid bolts, need to upgrade those and maybe lift it so I can get off the belly. Fenders are all back on, lost a tire on one side, cracked wheel on another and while the stock metal bumpers are tough they flex and misalign easily. Want to get things right before heading back out and maybe a little more capable. Can’t wait to get back out with everyone.
