To spool or not to spool

Hi,

I am building a set of junk yard super duty axles for my JK and considering whether or not to just put a spool in the rear axle. The last few runs I have been running with the rear axle locked to whole time and it doesn't seem to annoy me too much. While the turning radius gets a bit worse I can normally fix it by just hitting the gas a bit around the corners.

For the front I am considering either an ARB air or a Detroit locker (I like the simplicity of the Detroit locker).

I understand that I would be committing to make my Jeep a dedicated off road rig.

Any other pros/cons I should be considering?

Jonas

Pros less parts to break and cheaper
Cons wants to push you sideways but you get use to it.
The yukon zip locker I believe fails locked. So does the arb comp one. Handy if your in a poopy spot and compressor or line shits out.
Whatever you do if you are planning on big tires stay away from e lockers.
A lot of guys I wheel with like ox too.

Agreed
I run that setup in my YJ.
I originally ran a Detroit in the rear until I snapped an axle shaft and destroyed the Detroit. Spooled the rear and never looked back.

If you got the cash and don’t plan to trailer it everywhere I’d go with a selectable

For a street driven 2-dr, I'd avoid a spool. I am running an Aussie Locker (auto locker) that is quite manageable, and doesn't have a tire size or horsepower limitation. Selectable would be ideal, but more $$. If you ever plan on street driving in the winter storms, i'd avoid the spool/aussie due to the wheelbase. Back when i drove my TJ in the winter it was always quick to rotate into a spin, that would be exaggerated with an auto or spool.

I'd be worried about constant traction control lights and such if you spool it. I know there is a button on the JK, not sure if there is an option to permanently turn it off using a code reader but I would make sure of that first.

That is the Question...

If it's a Dedicated trail rig, I'd spool the rear, and selectable the front. Though I'd also pull all the electronics you could if you do a Dedicated trail rig...
