Front axle U-joint

Over the winter I replaced both front axle u-joint with cap grease fitting units. Wheeled Harris and a new joint failed . I have never seen this but two opposing sides snapped off almost clean enough to be cut off. Not the grease fitting side. Thats when I noticed it also had a plug in the trunion.
1) is there a way to be sure the ears are good on both half's ?
2) I just got another brand with just the cap fitting to change them both.
3 I found another short side complete shaft frozen joint . Should I put that one in rebuilt or stick with the one I just rebuilt not knowing if I have damage

I have never seen a u joint snap on both sides without stretching out the ears. How do the caps go in?

It went together normal ? I used a press to get it apart . All 4 caps were in the ears ! Two snapped off right at the body. The outside of the ears was gouges from turning together all day . The only ruff stuff was that morning just into the trail with the hill and ledge that Ken had trouble saying I was the only one of 13 to get over it unassisted :) I wasnt gentle with her. So thinking back there were quirks all day that didnt feel right but she went forward.I put the shafts side by and on top of each other , end to end . They just dont look any different. Im just gonna rebuild the spare and stick that one in . Im all new to this u-joint thing and thought Id ask. FjR68

Make sure your spindle bearings are still good.

Checked that when Ken and I did the u-joints. We actually re- hand packed em. Still felt good when jacked up with the tire on . Ill look at them before I put it together. Thanks for the help FjR68
