Shock mount....
So I finally got a chance to work on the rear XJ D44. I welded on a truss and cut off the original shock mounts to raise them up 1"-2" to increase down travel. When I try to re-cut the 2-3/4" radius on the mount, I realize my 4" grinder is not going to work. I am wondering if any of you who has a plasma cutter or drill press can help me re-cut the radius. I'll bring your favorite beverage. TIA
I haven't used my MIG welder for a while. This is one of my better welds

Nice weld!!
Re: Shock mount....
You could try cutting it with a jig saw by hand and then clean it up with a grinder, if you have a jig saw.
I bought a Ryobi bench-top drill press and I've been pretty happy with it... Wasn't a ton of $ either.
Or you could order some new shock mounts... several places have the kind you weld on.

Thanks. Still want to learn "stick" welding like Joe using batteries.Chris wrote:Nice weld!!
I saw some online. I like to reuse the original mounts if I can. They seem to be better than the after market ones.nostaw wrote: Or you could order some new shock mounts... several places have the kind you weld on.

I'm a Sam Adams kind of guy.
You can stop by any time this weekend. I'm working Sat, but it's right next to my garage. Sunday I plan to be down there working on the old REO.

Re: Shock mount....
I found stick welding easier than MIG, but then I had great equipment at the school. 240V DC Lincoln "Tombstone". With a good heavy duty welder like that, you'll find that you can start a long arc that doesn't weld anything, that gives you enough light to drag your stick over to where you actually want to weld, then lower it and start welding.norstar wrote:

I bought one of those 110V AC 70Amp stick welders from Walmart, but I've never succeeded in starting an arc with that thing.

Use a 7014 contact rod. If that wont arc , throw that welder out! FjR68

I'll give that a try, but I'm thinking I'll probably end up tossing it - unless somebody here wants it.Frank wrote:Use a 7014 contact rod. If that wont arc , throw that welder out! FjR68
Wait - just had an idea - but I'll start another thread rather than hijack this one.
