Well tonight I had another caliper freeze, is this a common issue?

Any suggestions?

yep, the single seal on the TJ caliper is $%it. You can get a rebuild kit, but it will most likely require a new caliper. PITA, but not much you can do to prevent it.

I hope I didn't kill my brand new rotor and pads, installed this week!

I would check to see if an earlier year caliper would fit or if a different knuckle would fit to run a different year caliper. Dana is pretty good about interchanging parts. A good GURU should have the answer. I put 79 knuckles on a 74 housing to gain disk . They just fit. I gotta believe there is another model with better calipers. FjR68

avoid the mud!!!! once i stoped running in mud they stoped locking up/

If you want I have a set of calipers of the d30 I pulled in my shed. Won't be home for a bit but your welcome to swing by and grab one if you like.....

Thanks for the offer! Going to pick up a new one on $25 plus core charge.

That is the good news about calipers... they are fairly cheap to replace -- just a PITA.

Ok so it was $23 and 1/2hr to change, just what Jon said a pita!

Should be same calipers for all 1989 - 2006 both YJs and TJs. Not uncommon problem, happened to my YJ once. Rotor got so hot, when I accidentally touched it, my skin sizzled.

Don't buy a rebuilt one here in MA - they'll make you pay tax on the core, but won't refund the tax when you turn the core in. Bringing in the core at purchase doesn't help - they charge you tax on the RB caliper AND the core. SOBs

87-early 90 calipers are different from late-90 to 95. They're actually the same as CJ units. The later ones use a different knuckle.

Example; My '89 Cherokee uses the same part number caliper as my front HP 44, which uses CJ outers.

The rule of thumb when off roading, is that you clean everything when you get home after any run. Many of us don't do that, and if the outer boot on the caliper cylinder is compromised in any way, water gets in and stays causing corrosion in the cylinder bore. When I had a Dana 30, I used to run a little bead of RTV where the boot meets the caliper body, which seemed to help. Now, I avoid mud and water like the plague. LOL
