Clicking Sound in Rear or transmission?
I have a fairly loud clicking sound coming from either the rear or the transmission. I think it is coming from the rear and is only heard when in gear. Rolling in Neutral does not produce sound but rolling in first gear does. The rear locker hasn't worked. The gears looked good when I last changed the Diff fluid 2 weeks ago. Any ideas on how I could further diagnosis my issue. I want to go to Rausch but not sure I trust the Jeep with this noise to make the trek. Thats a long tow truck home. This is in a 2004 Rubicon this stock Dana 44 and locker. I did change pinion seal about a month ago, Could an over tightened pinion nut cause this? I am pretty sure that this is not U Joint related. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Clicking Sound in Rear or transmission?
Does the click occur with what seems a full tire revolution or does it occur quicker?
Does it occur during light acceleration and deceleration? Is it affected by acceleration or deceleration?
Did the clicking start all at once or did it come on gradually over time?
How many miles are on it?

Re: Clicking Sound in Rear or transmission?
Seems to be full Tire rotation. Seems to be both acceleration and deceleration but hard to tell because of exhaust noise. Most pronounced when when in gear and rolling in first gear, if in neutral and rolling I don't hear it. Seems to have come all at once, 122k for mileage.Kurt wrote:Does the click occur with what seems a full tire revolution or does it occur quicker?

I dont think its a diff at all . If you can roll in neutral and not hear it at all . I think that would eliminate drive shafts and diffs. If you clutch to the floor in neutral rolling ? Just noise in gear , leads me to believe its in the trans. Gotta try more combinations as online its hard to decide. How about putting it on 4 jack stands and trying that as you wont have to duct tape your neighbor to the bottom. Let us know. FjR68

I dropped it off at a tranny shop to help diagnose and maybe fix depending on the issue.

Initial diagnosis is the CV joint in driveshaft. Drive shaft is going to be rebuilt and then we will go from there. Good catch Mark.
