Jerry Can Project

Unread post by MattJ »

Finally finished this project after several weeks of work. Two side mounted water cans, each with two sets of caps. One set has a u-bolt for locking and one set has a spigot. I also cut off one side of the brackets so that the cans can be rotated horizontally for use while they are in the bracket. Since the cans weigh 45 pounds when full, this should be much easier than pulling them down and finding a table, stump or rock to put them on. I plan to make a small neoprene sleeve for the padlock so that it won't rattle when I am in motion.

They sure do look good! Do the doors open enough to get in and out when the cans are horizontal?

I'd call those 'tree bumpers'.

And yeah, watch out for opening the doors.

I wonder what's on the other side.

I like the overland theme for the jeep! I'm planning on a long term goal of overland style rig and trailer where I can drive to where I'm going with a 1.5k lb trailer with roof top tent, kitchen and storage, then set up base camp for a week or two while out wheeling the jeep, hiking, biking or kayaking.

We all have our goal! Glad to see your uniqueness and ingenuity! Keep it up!

Yes - definitely won't have the brackets or cans mounted for trail rides in the trees! But they do fit pretty well between the fenders and the side mirrors and are only 7 inches wide. The brackets attach with three bolts and come off easily (I've had to do it many times as I tried different ideas for designing a locking cable that would secure the cap, the air vent AND the can itself all at once). I'm planning to mount my CB antenna behind the bracket on the driver side. The mirrors don't hit the jerry can when it is upright (they were designed with that specific clearance in mind). But when horizontal, I am sure they would. But I figure I would only have one can horizontal at a time, and then only when parked in a campsite with the spigot cap installed.

I did a ton of research on mounting options - this post helped convince me that this location was a safe and convenient spot to mount water cans:

But I definitely need to trail test them!

I think there are a few of us BSJ members that share that goal! That's why this forum is such a great place to compare ideas, configurations, designs and challenges. Would be great to get a group organized and do some extended overlanding someday and see how many days we can go without spotting asphalt . . .

Jerry cans were popular at our Scout recruiting day! Maybe next time I should fill them with Kool-Aid. Made a lot of new Jeep fans that day, I think! Long line formed to climb around in the tent . . .

I just finished a design for a second set of jerry cans. This set holds nothing other than two large JBL speakers. I used a marine amplifier that allows me to broadcast music as well as my own voice through an interior microphone hookup. Was a great addition to our town Memorial Day parade this year. They were LOUD! It was fun to call out the names of families I recognized along the parade route.
