iPhone trail mapping app

Hey guys and gals
So I found an app called AccuTerra for the iPhone, the Acuuterra maps are not great but the App does work fine with google maps and google satalite. I played with it a bit this weekend on a dirt road near up in ME and was mildly impressed, I'd say the accuracy is within 10' for going back to a place and the the app records a path or trail for later viewing on the map. Best of all the app itself is free. it does a number on your battery so if you dont have a car charger it may kill your phone. Maps are 1.99 per state and I found a bundle of the NE states (but not ME.) for 1.99 as well. I think the resolution on the individual states is slightly better than on the North Atlantic map set as its called. I drove up and down the same dirt road a bunch of times over the weekend and it was a fair represnetation of the drive. you can also geo tag photos, drop pins to mark a spot etc. Suprisingly the device works for GPS even when cell signal is gone but you need to cache maps to do this or use the accutrea maps. Figure for the short $ its worth checking out as not all of us have off road GPS and a few of us have iPhones.

Jeff - thanks for the info, will have to check out the app. I wonder if it will work if you don't have service.

I've also used MotionX GPS. Great for mapping (can post to facebook and save 100+ Mapped trails on the phone) and most of the maps i believe around here are cached

Not an iPhone app, but for Android OS there is GPS Logger -- It is a free logging app that will record GPS tracks in either .gpx or .kml for easy import into other software (google earth, Delorme Street Atlas/Topo, etc...). Doesn't have a map component, but it is great for collecting the raw track data, which can be used with any mapping software and also for geo-tagging photos.

It seemed to work off gps. At one point I had no signal but it continued to log my path

Heard good things about motionX as well....

Very cool app, I like the way you can send the details of your trip to email or facebook and view the map on Google maps. Wouldn't be very good for hiking because the battery goes very quickly with this app

I saw an old lady in Orleans (Cape) the other day driving a Granada and she had a big old compass mounted on the top of her dash. I wonder if she has an iphone.

Just saying.

just heard chrysler released a free iphone app for recording trail maps etc. if you use it please dont share the tracks as that is the intent of the app as we need to keep private land private. I just dont get the trend im seeing with bfgoodrich and this app why they are so eagar to show where you wheeled as there are irresposible people out there that will ruin things for us...
