What do each of the different icons to the left of the threads mean? Particularly the ones that look like they are scrolling.

Some of the icons are "Assignable" when you start a therad such as the "?" Others are automatically assinged. The scrolling one is a "hot topic" with a lot of board traffic and a certain number of replies and views... there are sticky topics which have the "pin" as well as "locked sticky" topics that have a padlock shape over the icon. That's the gist of it...
