Trouble removing transfer case shift knob

All,

I'm planning on replacing some interior trim in the floor console, and I'm having trouble removing the transfer case shift knob. I have tried brute force as well as leveraging an open-socket wrench and hammer. I simply cannot get it to budge.

I suspect I'm simply not strong enough, but if anyone has any tips they would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, if someone is strong enough to have done it before I'd appreciate borrowing that strength if willing and able to lend a hand.

I've definitely viewed the many YouTube videos on the subject, and nothing seems to work. I haven't tried a pipewrench or locking pliers because I'd rather not destroy the OEM knob.

I'm hoping there are some tips I'm missing.

Get a strap wrench, twist it back and forth a couple of times. Once you can twist it by hand, just grab it with both hands and pull real hard

It's not screwed on, it's just pressed on over the shifter...

So, it's been removed--but not without significant damage. For me, the strap wrench didn't work as it always eventually slipped. Instead, a pair of locking pliers was used to twist it back and forth before pulling it off. I've replaced it with a Drake knob that comes off very easily in case I need to get into the console again. I can't imagine replacing and then destroying another knob every time I need access.

Mine came off after twisting with the strap wrench, and popped right back on no problem.

For what it's worth. Heat it up with a "hair dryer" and pull!
