I need a boat trailer frame sandblasted... I could wire wheel the whole thing, but it will prob take me days considering how bad it is. Can anyone recommend a local vendor who sandblasts frames?

Any suggestions for re-painting? I've typically just used eastwood rust converter, rusty metal primer and paint, but is there something better for a steel frame? Since I'm doing the entire frame at once (and I can strip it down completely) I'd like to make it last. The trailer has already taken a number of salt water baths so I need to be smart about this...

Galvanize?

I received a quote for $300-$350 to sandblast. This sound reasonable?

Sounds OK, I paid about $100 for a bumper/tire carrier to be blasted.

For a boat trailer, I'd consider hot-dip galvanizing. A 2 minute search on Google shows a number of places in the area that do it, and some of them sandblast as well. I'd at least get numbers for the cost.

Wow... $1750 to sandblast and galvanize. At that price I'll just pay the $300 and paint it myself.

Any recommended two part paints? I can just use Rustoleum but if there's anything tougher it would be worth it.

Ryan , 3buks is a good price for blasting. Im purdy sure you can buy the galvanize and spray it yourself on a windless day. Id paint over that or use the POR base and top coat. FjR68

Cool! That looks like good stuff. Topcoat with herc or another undercoat? Any special prep required after galvanizing before topcoating?

Usually galvanized trailers are left as such. I would sand the coating with 3/400 grit sand paper to scratch the surface to give the paint or rust proofing something to hold onto. I use "Duplicolor" under coating . They have two kinds at parts stores. I use the one with the white label "sand finish" Vs the all black can . which is thicker , but on hot days the floors of Mona would get tacky again. The sand finish seems to hold up to wheelin and stays dry no matter. Ive done undercarriage on Mona and "Big Red " alias PITA , stays where you put it and last . My opinion counts for beans , so go start a farm ! FjR68

Trailer came out great! They ended up having to sandblast as well as acid dip, so the total cost was ~$500. Time will tell how durable the coating is but so far so good. I was also able to disassemble the trailer in their yard which made transportation much simpler.

So you had them clean & hot-dip galv it?

Yeah, originally they thought they could just acid dip so it would be cheaper but there was enough paint on there they wanted to sand blast.
