Detroit Locker

Unread post by Frank »

Does a Detroit locker need a friction modifier ? Kevins has started making that noise (Snap) like you just busted an axle . Even while going straight but after making a corner. Couldnt replicate it yesterday in a cul-de-sac going right or left but were going to drain and look in there today. Some times its multiple while just driving straight but mostly after making a turn. Ideas ?? FjR68

I've never heard of a Detroit requiring any friction additive. Might need a particular grade of oil. I've heard noises, but I don't know if that one is a cause for concern.

That's what my rear diff sounded like. Turned out to be broken teeth on the ring and pinion. Hope it's not that!

Its not the R&P ! Whew . Its got to be the Detroit. I know the normal noises they make but this is random and when it happens , its consecutive ! I was reading online and some people have found broken springs or worn out engagement teeth on the drive gears. Wont know untill it comes apart. He is going to call Eaton on Mon. and get a rebuild kit or a spool. Thanks for the come back. FjR68

Every part inside the Detroit looked fine. The drive gears ,the driven gears, the planetary , the springs . Not much else in there. Brad or Brett from Eaton said they dont have rebuild kits . ???? Cant believe that . Either way we put it back together and installed it. Going to run it on 4 jack stands to try to see if the rear jumps of its the T-case or some thing else. Just dont know at this point. Thanks for the check back. FjR68

Yes - it's a full carrier Detroit (the one John installed for me many moons ago)

Which answer.... Type of carrier or why it's now making noises?
