I am wondering if a miller 140 is enough to weld rock slidders with 1/4" brackets to the JK frame? Hand anyone done welding to the frame?

Two things to consider , One-- If the slider is to be welded to the frame , it should not be connected to the body ! The frame and body need to be able to move in their own mounts. The body flexes different than the chassis. Two-- The 140 amp welder you speak of is 120 volts or 240 ? A 120v welder can weld the two together but it is marginal unless it has a gas shield . Fluxcore wire outdoors will present issues and Im not sure it would withstand a hard impact. Other things to consider would be how clean the pieces are . Depending on the mounting plates ,you might consider bolting them also. Any type of vertical weld with a 120v welder and I assume the plates are 3/16th or better would need to be pre-heated with a torch for better penetration . I just read you 1/4" plates , Duh? Id ask someone in your area with a 240 to give you a hand. FjR68

It is 120v I use argon CO2 shielding gas with solid wire. It is a frame only connection. The instruction say weld but there are holes that could be used as bolt holes. The frame is flawless and the mounting plates are sanded and I plan to grind 45* bevels in the edges to maximize weld areas.

Hears the deal . That welder will stick it to the chassis ! Will it stay---- maybe . Its there to take a hit , if it comes off when it gets hit , it will damage everything your trying to protect. It wont produce enough penetration to make it permanent. Ask anyone who has had Trusses or tow hook, or something structural be ripped off. FjR68

Get some sample pieces that you can weld together, then cut through, to adjust amperage and wire speed. I found my Lincoln 140 could burn nicely into 1/4 plate if bevel ground. I was able to dial wire speed back enough. Practice, practice, practice...
