MA Inspection question

Unread post by Carl McFly »

I'm taking my rig in for it's annual inspection this weekend. No CEL light, all safety stuff is in order

My question is, since my bad Larry is a Y2K, does that mean this time next year the emissions won't matter and even if the CEL light is on it won't fail? Is 15 years the criteria for a safety only inspection? Or does that kick in the year after, in 2016? Or am I screwed and a slave to the angry CEL gods forever?

When it comes on, no big. I fix it. Occasional O2 sensor or sometimes a hose pops off the evap canister. I'm just wondering if after this year I can just put a piece of duct tape over it

Your CEL is part of a visual emissions inspection process.
However... They may not care.

Was told by my place that at 15 years old they will not fail a vehicle due to a check engine light. :)
They made it a point to tell me when I last had my 1999 Saturn inspected.

However you still have to pass the tailpipe opacity test. There can't be any visible smoke from the tailpipe.

No, the oil light tells you to change your oil. It comes on every 100,000 miles or so. Just put more in, no need to drain it if you wait long enough. The check engine light is just there to remind you to look under the hood once in a while to make sure nobody stole the engine. I keep checking but I've never lost one.
