Pulling the trigger

Unread post by DDewar53 »

Jeep is headed up to Lou's shop (Elias 4WheelDrive Center in Townsend, MA for you noobs).

New tires - 35" Toyo ATs

OX front & rear

regear to 4.88

Heavy duty alloy axleshafts all around.

Tom Woods driveshafts front & rear.

Can't wait to get it on the trail after that...

(Lou - is that a good enough plug? Should I put your info in bold? Ha Ha)

Lou doesn't visit forums at all, Don... On behalf of Elias 4wd Center...
Thanks for the plug!

And those are Toyo AT2 tires, much more aggressive than the old AT tires. And longer lasting.

That is a great set up.
The OX lockers are bomb proof, we've had a few come back from years ago that Chris did at the dealership in Quincy he worked at or previous techs at Elias have installed, and they come out looking brand new and perfectly ready for a second life in anew housing.
The OX cover is milled out of a solid block of steel, so no weld will ever fail or leak.
Hopefully, you're going with button activate solenoids for the straightest cable installation.
The 4.88s we're using for JKs are eaiser to install than other ratios, and will be thick cut and use Dana 50 hardware. All the math on the net will say to use 4.56 for 35s, but it just isn't enough. You need to go a little steeper on JKs because the V6 (3.8 or 3.6) needs a little more RPM than stock right out of the box, so you need just a little more to get it into the happy spot it needs. We're not shooting for good enough, we're looking for an improvement over stock.
The rear JK 44 shafts (Rubi or non-Rubi, and they are different) get bent flanges that cause vibes pretty easily, even with no off road use. One good curb can bend them.
Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts - 'nuff said. I have a cut away behind my desk. It's not just length and ends you get, it's a lot more drive shaft and for far less than OEM replacements, sometimes a $299 shaft is HALF the price of OE.

I, for one, think the JK is indeed the best platform they ever built. Set up and tuned right, they just work.

Stay in touch about your tie rod/steering, skid plates, and e-helpers. The e-helpers, like Superchips Trail Dash, don't get enough credit for all they can do for performance and driver experience.

Hi Mike

Yes, went with the solenoids, I think they're well worth it. I'm pretty good on skidplates, I have a charcoal cannister skid and a fuel tank skid (the same one Duncan bent up, so I'll still need to take it easy). It's been a good ride all along, always went where I pointed it (until this spring on bald tires at GG.) Gonna be a great machine now.
