Odd gear wear?

Guys,

So I changed the diff fluid in the 60 and found some metal shavings on the magnet... not good. This look normal or am I fubar'd?

I also opened up the 44 to change the fluid/inspect and found similar gear wear...

had you re-geared this? I dont like the look of the scoring on the ring and carrier but some amount of metal is normal after new gear break in... did you take picks of the amount of metal in there?

Looks like the backlash is too tight. It's possible the pinion is too close too.

I also think it was to tight. That looks more like galling than wear. It looks to me like a good pattern , just backlash is tight. My guess from the pics. FjR68

So I took out the axle to do some work on it... Here is the metal I found and gear pattern. What do you think? Do I need to redo the gears or simply adjust?

I'd say regear. The ring gear rounding over at the end of the tooth is a definite concern, and if the ring gear looks that bad your pinion gear is going to look a lot worse.

I would call Lou @ Elias 4WD and ask him to take a look at the pics... Get an expert opinion. They do a lot of R&P setup.

I know you've done business with Mitchell... You could try them if you know someone there.

X2. This is the best way to be sure.

I don't like the look of the "grainy" picture. Wear should be smooth as a baby's butt.

The main thing that concerns me is seeing the end of the teeth on the ring gear rounded over. That's a lot of stress/contact on that part of the gear to cause that, also the reason I have concern about the pinion gear's condition.

Definitely agree on posting a pattern.

Ask, and you shall receive. One thing to remember, since it is a reverse rotation the "rules" for backlash, pinion depth, etc are opposite when reading the pattern.

Agree...
I'm no gear pattern expert but the wear pattern looks fug-ly.

What's the white on the teeth to the left of the pattern? Chips?

Ryan : It still looks like the pinion is to deep. What caused the lines on the carrier ? Hitting the end of the pinion ??. The original pics looked to tight on the preload and this one looks like the pinion is to deep . Put some paste at the bottom of the pitch and make sure its not touching down there. Find out what made the mark on the carrier. Paste the end of the pinion see if it gets on the carrier. The 60 is a removable 3rd member ? Bring it to the meeting. Good luck dude. FjR68

kurt, the white stuff was just my garage being a mess. wasn't on the gears when i opened 'er up.

franky, the lines may be from when i used a piece of PVC to add resistance when making the pattern. I'll see if they wipe off later.

the preload on the carrier bearings is actually too low right now, but only because I am running an ARB. it doesn't leak at all until i am making a turn when locked, then it leaks. those symptoms seem to indicate that the preload is too low, so the carrier flexes enough to make the seal leak.

it's actually not a removable third, so no luck there. however, if anyone wants to swing by and give me some guidance after the meeting i'll be wrenching away!
