Home built trailer reg

Thinking of pulling the trigger on a home built trailer, if I can work out a few details first. Went to the Mass RMV site and read up on registering a trailer but I have questions on what hurdles I might have to jump through and over, to register a trailer with no VIN

First, a little background. It's home built, it started life as the back half of a Mazda pickup (anyone remember the Sundowner??). It's wired for lights but even if they don't work, I can get trailer lights from HF for short money. It has 2 broken u-bolts that secure the leafs to the axle, but that should be an easy fix  Uh-huh.....

My question is, has anyone gone through this in MA? I have a bill of sale, and it's way under the GVW where the RMV gets all squirelly with their rules and regs. Not having a VIN, that can't be good. But I can't find anything on the RMV site that covers that

Carl, you're going to need to see your insurance co. They will take the BOS and GVW (under 3K doesn't need a title) and will draw up the paperwork for the RMV, which will include a RMV-1.

After that, you should be good to go. Also, being under 3,000lbs, you won't have to visit your insurance guy every year for registration. Under 3K can be renewed online every November.

The alternative would be to register in Maine. Mass charges $20 per 1K lbs. My big trailer is registered in ME for $99 for 5 years. It can be done in about a week with the proper forms. Some question the legality, but I have not found any laws that say otherwise. I do pay yearly excise tax in my town though. Let me know if you want more info.

Ct. actually has done away with truck back half trailers UNLESS you have a receipt fron the bone yard you dumped the front half at. So you honest thieves dont steel and then cut in half a perfectly good pickup , Im guessin thats what their thinkin. FjR68
