ADD and me

So I finally got around to pulling the axle on my trail beast to replace that u-joint that lost its cap after the GG run. About 45 minutes into it (translation: it took me 45 minutes to pull the axle, remove and replace the u-joint) I realized I was using all my trail tools and I could have done this work in the rest area and it would have been quicker than waiting for a tow truck and the whole time I'm cranking on my caliper bolts not thinking that I'm using a 1/2" drive torque wrench and SNAP!!!! back to reality

So a $1.09 later I'm back in bidness and oh yeah what was I saying? ;)

That's the best way to do it. The only thing I use a press for are ball joints. U-joints always go faster with a hammer and socket. Never met a cap I couldn't remove, including the monster on the 14 bolt in my old diesel Chebby.

Next time you'll be ready for action.

Keep your eye out for a pair of used D30 axle shaft assemblies to carry as spares.
Many times it's quicker to just pop the old axle shaft/busted u-joint assy out and slide in a spare shaft assembly rather than mess with replacing a u-joint on the trail. Save the hassle of replacing the u-joint in the removed shaft assy until you get home. ;)

Umm, I think the banjo bolt is the hollow one that holds the hydraulic line onto the caliper and provides the path for the fluid. It's called that because the fitting that it goes thru on the end of the flex line looks like a banjo.

Just call me Cliff Claven...

I'm pretty sure that they never made a factory 14 bolt front axle although Ian Johnson did put together a hybrid 14 bolt/D60 on Xtreme 4x4.

That is why I try not to use 1/2" drivers for small bolts... Haven't broken caliper bolts, but I've broken others that way...

yeah..... funny story on that.....

I had a pair of spare axles and last week before the run I took out the old u-joints and when I was pressing in a new one I found out one of the ears was oval shaped. So I ditched the axle and yeah, I'm in the market for another one. And yes it was the side I needed

Didn't say it was a 14 bolt front. It still had a ujoint on the yolk that needed to be pounded.

I have a couple of drivers side shafts that your are welcome to.

- Drivers inner shaft, accepts the "large" u-joint 297/760 (from a YJ but will work in a TJ too)

- Drivers side axle assembly (inner shaft, u-joint & outer stub shaft) smaller 260 u-joint

You are welcome to either one if you want.
I can bring one to the Spring meeting if you can use one of them.

thanks Kurt! The stub takes the 297 u-joints, if you can bring the inner shaft, that would be great. Thanks again
