Hey Doug -
What's a portal axle? Is that like what's also on Unimogs, where the axle is offset upward (with gears) at the wheel, thus moving the whole pumpkin and axle tubes up? That's what this jeep looks like it has...

You can get a set from Dynatrac - I haven't chased down any pricing info yet
http://www.dynatrac.com/products/axles/portals.html
Found one - a front for only $8750.00

Agree 100%. I wish the OEM's would seriously consider incorporating them into their designs. Imagine the Rubicon JK (Hmm, one of the last solid axle rigs from an OEM) with all of its' features......sittin' on top of portals.
Always been a fan of portals....great packaging and stress relieving on individual components along the driveline.

Think of it as moving the wheel hubs and brakes down while the tubes and diff are in thier regular location.
Portals have pros and cons. Wheel leverage, cost, & complexity being cons. I know a guy in NE4W who broke a portal box.
