guys,
we did a u-bolt style yoke install on my old dana 30 a few years back, and i am trying to remember the details. what is the proper rotational drag for the pinion? i know we needed a new crush sleeve and seal. also, can any recommend a good dial style inch-lb torque wrench to set the drag?

In theory you can retighten the nut if you measure the preload before and tighten until you get the same measurement after changing the pinion yoke.... Then you don't need to mess with a new crush sleeve...

I use a beam style in-lb torque for checking preload. Well my old Chilton's book (that actually gives axle rebuild info!) says used bearing preload should be 15-25 in-lb and new bearings should be 20-40 in-lb. Make sure to lube the bearings for a true reading!

Forgive me if this is past the expiration date on the thread, so to speak (I just joined and I'm not sure what the typical lifespan of a thread is), but I'm looking to swap a u-bolt yoke into my D30 as well, but I wanted to clarify/get confirmation:

The OPs LJ has a crush sleeve, but didn't the older XJs, same as my YJ, use spacer shims instead of crush sleeves? Was it all HP/reverse cut D30s that used shims, or was there a swap-over at some point?

All high pinion Dana 30's use pinion shims - no crush sleeves.

XJ uses a crush sleeve in the rear axle for the C8.25.

As Joe said, not for the HP D30.

Great, thank you!

Typically Dana axles use shims for pinion bearing preload. Most others use crush sleeves.
