4.0 oil filter adapter leak

The engine is from a '92 Cherokee and has the oil filter adapter. Oil is weeping from the oil filter adapter. I can get the 3 gaskets for the adapter from the dealer.
Another option - Can I remove the adapter and attach the filter directly to the block? The filter is a NAPA 1084 with 3/4 - 16 threads.

Andy,
You'd need to get an adapter bung to mount the filter directly to the block. The O ring kit doesn't cost a whole lot and is easy enough to do (it would cost less than the bung).

Thanks John!
Did the adapter bung to mount the filter directly to the block come stock on some vehicles? If so, do you know which ones?

Andy : I bought a relocate kit. I believe it was Mr. Gasket. 60 someting. Bolt the adapter to the block and the hoses tey supplied allowed me to mount it on the firewall, now it dont spill on the axle and steering when I change the oil. Hope that helps. Miss you. FjR68

According to the parts diagram the 1987-1990 YJ's did on the 4.2L
Also the 1987-1990 5.9 engine.
The PN is: 3300 3538
$19.20 or so at the dealer.

How do you keep the axle and steering parts from rusting if they don't get a nice coating of oil to protect them at regular oil change intervals?

Thanks for the suggestion. Access is easy so I would rather keep is simple and don't plan on relocating the oil filter.
Miss you too man. Come on out and we can run the Rubicon Trail, or Fordyce Creek (Sierra Trek in August).

Thanks Kurt. After some research the bung for this uses metric threads and a smaller oil filter.
I found a pic on-line of an 2005 TJ showing the filter mounted directly to the block. I dug some more on the berrysprinter site and found a bung/connector part 53007563. The local dealer can get it for $5.60. The 3 o-rings would cost double that, probably could get the o-rings cheaper somewhere else. Some on-line posts suggest the bung in the adapter can be removed and screwed into the block. The 1992 is at parts number break so I will probably get the 2005 bung to be sure. Let you know how it goes.
