Is this wheel bearing shot??

Unread post by ChrisD »

Some of you might have seen my posts regarding a knocking sound, front driver side, when my tire comes in contact with a bump. Well today I decided to tear into my front end and get to the bottom of what is going on.

Before tearing into the balljoints I inspected the wheel bearing, I believe it is toast but wanted to double check. The video below show how much play there is. Also the following photos displays blue discoloration around the flange area, this same blue is by the threads of the axle nut.

So is it toast??

There shouldn't be any play it it. Might as well replace both.

Regarding the 175 ft lb torque spec for the axle nut, how many of you guys actually torque the nut to the spec or do you just blast it with the impact wrench? Just wondering if I need to rent a torque wrench that goes to 175 ft lbs.

I think you want to be somewhat accurate on this as it may influence the preload on the bearing. My torque wrench goes to 150 so I will do 150, then give it a 1/4 turn with a regular wrench. Autozone and others may do free rental on a torque wrench if you are not ready to purchase one.
