Well its the time of year I dread. Inspection time. I have many issues i need to fix before I go on another run but my main priority is my speedo. The only thing I have to worry about for my inspection is a check engine light. I installed my SYE about 6 months ago and I (aparently)didnt do something I was suppose to. I was in such a rush to get the SYE in and do some wheeling I did not even consider speedo issues. I relized this after a day or 2 of driving when the check engine light came on. I really dont care if the speedo is correct I just need to do something so it doesnt cause a check engine light. It is a 96 Jeep Xj with the 231. Looking for the fastest and easiest fix

What code is it throwing?

If the VSS is off you can either reprogram or get a new speedo gear. My OBD1 YJ doesn't care about the VSS being slightly off, but I replaced the sprag anyway. It's very simple and IIRC about $10-$15.

I will have to scan the code again cant remember. It is obd 2. It was way off before the SYE install(33's and new gears) no check engine light, but after the sye install speedo doesnt work at all and that caused the check engine light (dont remeber the exact wording but it was related to speedo

What kit did you use? Check the connector at the VSS for corrosion. Use a bit of dielectric grease in the terminal.

Did you reinstall the sprag or did it come with a new one?

Did you clock the housing so the gear teeth make contact?

Did you re-use your old speedo sensor or use a special one for the SYE?

Assuming it worked before the SYE install and you installed your old sensor then it sounds like the speedo sensor wasn't clocked properly when it was installed.
You may have to change the sensors "clocking" in the SYE housing to get it's gear to mesh with the one on the tcase output shaft.
Did you remember to install the blue plastic gear on the tcase output shaft when installing the SYE?
