D44 (un)limited slip

I have a Trac Lok (AKA Trash Lok) pushing my rig and was looking at possibly replacing the clutches. Spent a while Googling clutch replacement and after getting past all the haters, there's not a lot of info out there. Other than you can get them for about $70 - $80

Does anyone have any experience replacing the clutches on a D44 LSD? I'm not in a hurry to replace clutches, and I might not do it at all. My heep holds it's own on the trails (at least the trails that I like running) and I'm not looking at a selectable locker. I read through the factory SM and I don't have all the 'special tools' (but I do have a BFH and a crow bah) and some of the steps didn't make a lot of sense, but I only tore into a diff one time, and that was under adult supervision :geek:

So since I'm not going selectable locker, is clutch replacement worth it? Or is replacing the clutches a PITA and probably not a good ROI?

Carl - unless you were going to install a lunchbox locker, I would say it is worth it. Would also give a chance to see what shape the bearings are in.

Karl : You would have to pull the axles to pull the carrier and then dismantle it. The clutch pak and and traction rings just have to go back in order. If yours is slipping Id say its worth fixin, if you just want to freshen it up. Id say wait till it slips. FjR68

See if you can find any articles about adding extra clutch packs... Gets a more aggressive limited slip which will help offroad more. I know people do it with the F8.8 LSDs.... I would bet you can do it too.

I used to put an xtra friction disk in my race bike clutches . Huh , never thought that would work in a diff as the carrier is a certain dimension. Great idea. Cheat anyway you can , just dont get caught. FjR68

The factory 8.8 shim order is different than a 44, iirc. The 8.8 is able to reconfigure the stack(to what the 44 already uses) to include an extra friction disk (but minus one steel disk).

Carl - you could always go up a couple thousandths in stack height to gain some grip, if you decide to rebuild.
