winch time!
it's finally time to get a winch. i'm leaning heavily towards superwinch, as it is a nice balance between price and quality. (love warn, but damn they're expensive). i'd also like to go synthetic and remote solenoid. thoughts on this one?

Since you like to "abuse" your junk spend a few extra bux for a good reliable one.
JP Mag did a review of a few different winch brands & models.

Re: winch time!
Superwinch (local & supportive to NE wheeling scene, but I like/run Ramsey), steel cable (seen too many syn lines break. Hardcore use = steel cable).

Re: winch time!
You pay premium $ for Warn, but you never hear anyone complain they had one fail and they seem to work flawlessly for years....
I just don't hear that about other brands...
I just got a synth line, but I haven't installed it... The main thing I don't like is the line is thicker so it shorter than the same strength steel cable would be...

Yea thats the point if any has to be made. 50' Of rope aint gonna go far. On the otherhand at 156.1 that sucker should be fast ! I also have a Ramsey,my only complaint is the speed of it. Anyone that went to Canada can attest to how much winches are worth. Have had it on there for seven of the eight years. Cheap ones get replaced without complaint ! FjR68

Wait a couple of weeks for the new Superwinch Talon series to come out.
I am the foremost authority on my opinion.

Re: winch time!
FWIW - I've been thinking of buying this one but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
I think I've noticed a couple Jeeps at Baystate with the EPI9.0S winch.

Re: winch time!
I've had my Superwinch EP9.0 for over six years now. Only issues I've had: The end cap on the motor housing rotted off the bottom (replaced by SW no cost) and it jammed once while doing a very tough pull (think that had as much to do with my spooling as anything else).
You can't bolt on experience!!!!!!

Re: winch time!
A quick follow up on my earlier comment about lengths of steel vs synth... A 3/8" synth line is ~80' and the 5/16" steel line is ~120' (my steel line is original to winch, ~6-7 yrs old).
I don't think I've ever been in a position where I really unspooled the entire cable and the length was a concern, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. With either type of line you can't really use all of the line... You need to keep most of a full layer of line wound up on the drum to keep the line from pulling off the drum / keep the drum from slipping, so more length is "better".

Re: winch time!
Finally!
Superwinch EPi 9.0. I remember looking at the comparable warn, and it was 300(?) bucks more expensive?

Now, does your question include the rear mount winch you've wanted?
Done.

Re: winch time!
yep, def leaning towards a superwinch, preferably talon series. As for rope length, I can purchase an extension for those times when the anchor is more than 50' away. Rarely seen someone need more than a 10' pull or so, so I think it is a great option.
yep keith, a rear winch is in the works! Since my jeep has a big ass (5" extra overhang for LJs) I might as well tuck a winch up there. I can't fit a full size winch but a 4500lb ATV winch should be no problem. Use a snatchblock, there's my 9000lb rating. Working on the CAD now...

I will always have a Warn on my rig, the Superwinch will serve as trailer duty.

Re: winch time!
Im very happy with my EPi9, nice fast line speed and has worked great aside with an initial install issue where some wires came loose from the solenoid...
their TS was great and they are local FTW! Great price at Amazon.com too. I like to buy local but it was a lot less there than lou / dom.... I can imgine the new winches will be even better... you getting a new bumper too??
