Can you install a rubicon locker (d44 axle) and have it function in a non rubicon d44 axle?

I have heard of it being done, but I have no firsthand knowledge of it. There is a thread on JF that shows the install and modification of the bearing cap (the airline goes in a notch in one of the caps).

Yes I've heard of it being done, but it's not worth it, IMO. The first gen Rubicon's lockers are not as strong as an ARB or other activated designs. The carrier shims are also installed on the outside of the bearings (like a Dana35), so you might have some issues there.
You would also need new gears, as the 'Con 44 uses "thick" gears.
I would look into getting an ARB.

I've wondered if you could install a rear Rubi locker in the front Rubi axle, that would give you a limited slip in both axles.

I believe the front locker is the stronger of the two, I could be wrong though..... If I blow one of mine up I will most likely replace with an ARB.
