XJ front end vibration

All,

I just purchased a 95 XJ and the front end vibrates from 55mph-65mph but anything lower or higher it smooths out and there is zero vibration. Any idea what it might be?

its a 4cyl, auto 4x4 nothing fancy.

TIA,

Jared

A speed specific vibration like that sounds like a tire balance problem to me.

I would look at the inflation of the tires and for wheel weights. Sounds like balance to me too...

Perfect. It needs new tires so I can potentially kill two birds with one stone :)

I'd also check out the front end steering and suspension components for wear.
Have somebody saw the steering wheel back and forth (starting with the wheel straight, turning left and right until there's just a little resistance) while you look underneath. There should be no play in the tie rod ends at the steering knuckles, pitman arm, or where the tie rod tube connects to the drag link. Also check the ends of the track bar while you're under there!! The bushing on the lower end can wear out, and I've seen the bolt holes get wobbled out even on stock vehicles.

I would check out the front end too. I have unbalanced 33's on my kid's XJ and it's smooth on the hwy at any speed. Same goes for my YJ on 38's.

IMO, a couple of ounces of weight on a 15 year old solid axle rig aren't going to make a difference.

There are lots of things...

Besides what was previously mentioned, check the axle bushings... If they are shot they can cause a vibe. I'd also check out the unit bearings, though I'm not sure they'd cause a vibe...

You really need to go over the entire front end and see what is worn / loose...
