so my jeep keeps throwing stupid codes. i'm tempted to get an OBDII reader so i can clear them out. however, i don't believe a tuner is much more $ so it might be worth it since I get more functionality then simply reading codes. thoughts?

I have just purchased the latest OBDll reader and A B S . If you get a tuner make sure it selectable as the power chip things add every thing to the top end only. Removing the codes wont fix the problem. FjR68

Some programmable chips have a knob you mount in reach and can tune for towing , power, economy. Can adjust while driving to a different mode. I had a chip and while it gave me 25 more H.P. and changed the shift points, That was the program it had and when towing I would notice the loss on the bottom end. The mid and top range of the RPM's was better. The newer ones are selectable/tunable ? Bill, from enfield might still have his power chip.It was an04 Rubi. He said the same thing,on the street it was a gain but a big loss in the woods. When you install it, it removes the factory info and gives you the new program. It stores the factory stuff in the programer. He changed it back. FjR68

so it sound like unless i pony up a bit of $ for a "switchable" tuner i might as well save my $ and just get a basic code reader. accurate?
any recommended codes readers?

I have an Actron. The one you used at RC.
It's worked well for me.

I have one I think I ended up getting at Sears... Works pretty well (isn't a Craftsman brand).

I have an Actron and it tells you what the problem is in plain English, not just the code
I had a CEL earlier today, plugged in my Actron.
It said "0456, Very Smalll Evap Leak. Check the gas cap DUMB AZZ!!"
See? Simple and easy to understand

My rig threw a Check Engine Light a couple of weeks ago. We don't have a code reader, however, my better half went to Advance Auto and bought me a new Gas Cap - the Check Engine Light went away on its own after I drove around town for a couple of miles after installing the new gas cap. I guess this cleared on its own?

if you fix the problem it will generally clear on its own. one of the issues i'm having is that i can't tell whether i've fixed something because it will take a while for the code to clear. i'd rather be able to fix something, clear the code immediately, and see if it comes back. (FYI, there is a nice trick for TJs to read the code, just turn the key to run 3 times quick and then look up the code on the internet)

Guess it comes down to what you want. I have the 9175 model, and it does everything I want - it reads codes, tells me what the codes are, I can clear the codes..... it does everything I need. So it's a good fit for me
