You can buy braided fishing line at any good tackle shop.
The stuff is super strong!
I use it to replace the pull cords on some of the window shades in our house.

Looks like that would work.
You can also look for "carpet" thread. It's also very strong and is smaller in diameter than fishing line.
Available in a variety of colors. Most sewing supply centers should carry it along with the heavy needle you'll need.
You may want to seal the new stitching with tent Seam Sealer to keep water from weeping thru the new stitching.
