That's why the freedom of a tow rig is nice compared to shipping. Shipping would offer more wheeling time, but you'd miss out on the "adventure" of gettin' there. It's give and take, I guess.
Having driven the trip entirely myself, I had no problem pulling 17-18 hr driving days. To me it was part of the adventure.

This was my thought last year, the driving out and back was part of the trip. Seeing parts of the country that I have not seen before. You know, the endless fields of corn, the wind farms, etc...

I'm looking forward to driving out again.

FYI pertaining to using a tractor trailer/ car hauler. They may not be able to stack lifted Jeeps top and bottom because of their height. Usually when you see a new car hauler you'll see trucks on top with cars below or visa versa. How tall is your rig? double it and add a few feet for the trailer. OVER HEIGHT. That would double the price in hauling it out there unless he was bringing cars at the same time.

A good point... We'd have to get some "trailer wheels"... Visit the local scrap yards and get spare donuts from the junkers...

Jeff, you could always transform your 4 dr JK into my dream tow rig/daily driver...

Hemi, Dana 60 rear, heavy duty rear bumper/tow bar, possibly better brakes, aluminum trailer. i bet you could tow your heep around on that without a problem. basically the same wheelbase as a WK, and close to the same weight. just give it a better engine (and a few other things) and go!

Take a look at the Nissan Armada and Titan. The Titan is the least expensive full sized pick up on the market and is very comfortable to drive. The Armada is an SUV on the same platform and has a 3rd row of seating.

As far as towing vs driving vs shipping, to each his own. Just pick a date and location to meet and form whatever travel groups you want.

I'm a whole foot taller than 4' and I should start charging for comments like that, then I can save up to get the surgery I want as well as the two I need.

If I make it to Moab I'd love to ship my Jeep, just to know I can ship it home if something happens out there. Unless I end up getting a tow rig that would be my DD. My dad thinks he can tow my CJ with his truck but I'm planning on having a tug of war with him and I think my CJ can pull his little truck. I don't think I could move the work one. Unlike you Jeff I don't have kids so I don't have to worry about them. I actually love my old TJ because I could not drive one kid in it. I'm also thinking I won't be having kids anytime soon (no one loves me enough for that) so I don't have to worry about a back seat.

Jeff : You saw my Sport Trac at Rausch ? Empty it gets an honest 20-21 mpg and 14-15 towing. Its not a power house towing but, the 4 doors and all the comforts , its quite nice as a D.D. FjR68

Nissan's suck, they rot out faster than any other vehicle on the market AND the rear ends do not stand up to towing.
I got this from a friend who owns a repair shop, has been in the field for many years. I was at his shop once and there was a Nissan on the lift. It was 4 years old and he was doing a ball joint. It was rotted underneath way to much for a 4 yr old car. I commented on it and he proceeded to tell me how much Nissan's suck for that.

Anyone have thoughts on the hemi powered Chrysler Acadia? Dealer I went to didn't have a hemi commander but the Acadia has a 8600 tow rating (vs 7400).. it was a decent SUV and had good acceleration on the hwy but was pretty long wheel base. It shuts down 4 cylinders on the hwy to save on gas when not towing too.. Frank I think you mentioned the tow rating was a bit lower for your Ford so IDK if it will pull a TJ on a trailer...

Chrysler doesn't make the Acadia, they make the Aspen. GMC makes the Acadia.

Most single car trailers go 1500-2000lbs, a TJ with winch and skids goes approx 3600lbs.

Yeah, early on they had an issue with under-filling the rear-ends.

What ever you think you're pulling, add about a grand.

My YJ weighs about 4200 - 4500 lbs dressed. Your little CJ weighs more than you think it does.
