Pinion nut - Model 20

I just ordered up my new rear yoke and was wondering how straight forward will the swap be? How much ft lbs of torque is required for the pinion nut?

The shaft is off to Tom Woods for some fixing as well.

Not just a matter of torquing it down to "x" ft-lbs.
I believe the 20 uses a crush sleeve to set the pinion preload.
(Model 20 people please jump in if I'm wrong... )
To do it right you ought to pop in a new crush sleeve and set your pinion preload with your new u-bolt style yoke and a new pinion nut.

A model 20 is a crush sleeve axle. IIRC, you have to measure the in/lb force it takes to rotate the diff. After seal replacement, add about 4-5 in/lbs to that number. If you mess up, you'll have to replace the crush sleeve, which in my experience, takes about 200-300 ft/lbs to set on this axle. In other words, it will suck doing it without air tools.

I've also used the witness mark method on a Dana 35, but you're replacing the yolk, so that's out.

To do it right you ought to pop in a new crush sleeve and set your pinion preload with your new u-bolt style yoke and a new pinion nut.

That is the best way to do it. It's going to take some muscle by hand though.

Physics...

Pipe Wrench + Cheater Bar to hold the Yoke
Socket with good breaker bar + maybe a Cheater Bar to tighten the nut

You may want to buy 2 crush sleeves... just in case your over "crush" the first one.
It's touchy to get the preload right without over doing it.

You'll also need an inch-lb torque wrench to measure the preload while you are crushing.

Thanks for the info guys! This one may be out of my range which is too bad as I was hoping for am excusee to buy a new set of air tools! All my tools fit in that yellow Home Depot special tool box. I don;t even have a socket large enough for the pinion nut...

I will talk to my local repair guy (he installed my gears) to see exactly what I am up for.

Well I still went out and picked up an impact wrench and a set of sockets from Harbor Freight and I have a date next Friday with my local mechanic Jimmy. He is going to walk me through the yoke install in his shop. My drive shaft is expected to arrive back from Tom Woods on Friday as well so if all goes according to plan I should be up and running again by next weekend for the South Shore Wheelers Toys for Tots run.
