Tranny issues / Swap
To continue my string of questions (Sorry in advance), my transmission seems to be slipping and I would like to know your thoughts.
Its a factory transmission 3 speed I believe and I would like to keep it auto.
I have been thinking about doing a fluid change on it and was wondering if anyone thought I would notice any difference. I have also been contemplating doing a AW4 swap had had issues with the electronic shift control.
Please let me know your thoughts.

You may want to check out novak's website (http://www.novak-adapt.com/) and Advanced Adapters (http://www.novak-adapt.com/)...
Novak has a nice site with info on engine/tranny/t-case swaps. They may have some general info that would help.
My best guess on swapping in an AW4 is you'll have to replace the ECU if you have an EFI engine (which I don't think you do, but I'm not sure). The AW4 has an external tranny control module which you'd need to install... from what I've read you can get a manual EFI ECU + AW4 (+ tranny controller) to work together (in a TJ). Then you'll need to get the XJ wiring harness for the tranny and figure out how to make it play with your YJ. Never met anyone who did it themselves though.
I think you indicated (separate thread) you were considering an engine swap. If you pulled your 4.2 and installed an XJ 4.0L + AW4, that would come with an ECU + TCU + wiring harness which would play nice together and you won't have to mess with adapting the flex plate/torque converter. Then you'd "just" have to get the YJ <=> engine wiring harnesses, tranny/t-case linkages, cross member, and fuel pump worked out (which may be easier).

Thanks. My jeep is already injected with a 4.0 intake and ECU. I will check out the adapter sites maybe there is a better option out there.

Finding an auto which doesn't require an external computer would make it easier...jbishop wrote:Thanks. My jeep is already injected with a 4.0 intake and ECU. I will check out the adapter sites maybe there is a better option out there.

Re: Tranny issues / Swap
Flush the tranny first. When was the last time the fluid was changed?
Replace it with ATF+4, which is miles ahead of any previous fluid specifications.
An AW4 swap is not easy for a first timer. PM HEEPJEEP on NEOW. He's into the AW4 swaps and I think he has a couple of YJ harnesses too.

While I am doing this I think I should do the axles also.
What fluid would you recommend for that?

Standard 80W90 hypoid gear oil and a tube of friction modifier if you have a clutch type limited slip.jbishop wrote:While I am doing this I think I should do the axles also.

A gallon jug of gear lube from Walmart is about $11.XX.

If I am doing all of these I should probably do the transfer case also. ATF4 in that or something else?

Re: Tranny issues / Swap
The original spec was Dexron III, but that spec was discontinued in '06. ATF+4 or Mercon V are far superior fluids and would work well. Personally, I run Mobil 1 multi vehicle ATF in my NP231HD (1/2 ton Dodge case) and it works very well.jbishop wrote:If I am doing all of these I should probably do the transfer case also. In reality, it's more important that you change the fluid, than what fluid you change with. On a budget, the DexIII quarts from Wally World will work, but for a few cents more you can get the ATF+4.

Re: Tranny issues / Swap
Good enough ATF+4 for the tranny and t-case.
