Jeep Wrangler A/C Compressor to Air Compressor

Unread post by dizilbdog »

Hi

So i wanted to start a thread on doing this to my Jeep I have a 99 Wrangler 4.0 AKA Sally's Jeep. I have talked to Kurt and John a couple of times on what exactly has to be done. I know that there are many parts involved so I wanted to see if people would list parts or websites what ever would be helpful. I'll keep this topic up then when sufficient info is obtained on where to get all the parts and what is needed, I'll make another page so BayStaters know exactly which parts and how much ect. Then hopefully we can get some BayStaters together to do this and take some pics and video so that othesr can do this. I know that probably some Jeepers would like to do this but don't know how.
Here are some of my links, it's a start.

Thanks
Brian

Curtis did you do yours with an air tank? I'm just looking to do mine without a tank just using the AC compressor.

I walk talking to Chris (can't think of his last name, Lou's mechanic) about this. I'd suggest you speak with him... There are some benefits to adding a tank (even if it is small) near the compressor to help accumulate liquids / oil. He has also done a lot of research on lubrication...

Yeah i've talked to Chris about it, I just figured maybe we could make it a project for some Baystate Jeepers to get together and do it together.

Dumb question, but does the A/C still work?

If so, I would rather have available coolness on a hot day than a Sanden compressor OBA. If your A/C works, just add a York or go electric.

Here is a "schematic" I found back when I did my system.

I omitted the tank and only used 1 quick disconnect under my hood for hooking an air hose to.

A pic of the air inlet filter and my tool oiler on the pumps inlet side.
Quick disconnect, gauge and pressure switch, and the brass pressure relief valve are visible behind them.

Kurt -

Are you relying on the tool oiler to lube the sanden, or do you have oil/grease in the body as well?

My oiler does 99% of the lubing.
About once a year I refill the oiler and usually remove the Sandens body plug and give it a few shots of oil too.

From what I've read the Sanden uses pressure from the heads to push lubricant into the moving parts/bearings in the body... The s10 guys who use them for air suspension have converted a few to grease and report fairly good luck. To do this they've torn down the compressor, cleaned it out, plugged some of the passages, greased everything, then reassembled. A problem they report having is that the body of the compressor does pressurize and can leak oil / grease if they try to use a zerk fitting.

Chris mentioned to me you don't want to use the oil which comes with the AC refrigerant.

When you got your Sanden did you do anything special to clean out the oil that was in the body?

Nope, I didn't tear down the Sanden at all when I got it. Just verified it spun over easily and that it did suck & push air as it should. Upon installation I did shoot a good amount of 10W30 into the top plug of it to be sure it was WELL lubricated before I started to use it. I'm sure any residual A/C oils would have quickly been pushed out with my initial load of 10W30 that I initially lubed it with.
I did have to drain my coalescing filter a couple of times during it's initial uses due to the inital load of oil.

It's worked flawlessly for many years now. 8-)
Maintenance wise I just drain the coalescing filter a couple of times a year and re-fill the oiler once a year.
