This was my thought last year, the driving out and back was part of the trip. Seeing parts of the country that I have not seen before. That's why the freedom of a tow rig is nice compared to shipping. Shipping would offer more wheeling time, but you'd miss out on the "adventure" of gettin' there. It's give and take, I guess.
Having driven the trip entirely myself, I had no problem pulling 17-18 hr driving days. To me it was part of the adventure.
I'm looking forward to driving out again.
