Clunking noise while coasting in 4-hi?

Unread post by WeekendWrangler »

Symptoms:

Nothing at all in 2wd. Shift into 4-hi, and as long as I'm applying light throttle, nothing. As soon as I let off the gas, I hear a clunk, clunk, clunk... it seems to be timed with the wheel rotation (scientifically tested by leaning out the window). When I shift back to 2-hi, it persists for a little, then goes away.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I'm going to put it up on jacks so I can actually get under it and pinpoint the noise, but I'm worried my transfer case is damaged. Though I just did ~400 miles on it over the weekend in 2-hi with no issues, so.... it's fine as long as I don't wheel it

Did you try turning up your radio? that usually keeps me from hearing the parts that are falling off.

Well its just a guess but here goes. Im guessing its front end related. It only happens in 4hi that you know of or it also does it in 4lo ? Im guessing its speed related and its only under power in 4hi/4lo . So Id be lookin at the cheap azz design of their front drive shaft first. It shouldnt be front end U-Joints cause the rotate whether its powered or not. The T-Case shouldnt be an issue as you arent having any expressed issues shifting it in and out. Let us know what you find/dont find. Im going to assume you meant JackStands ! FjR68

Take the front driveshaft off. See if it still does it. Probably either the driveshaft joint. Or streached chain in the Tc.

Sorry for the suspense... the forum was down. I finally pulled the front and rear diff covers last weekend and what I found up front surprised me a bit... [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]ImageImage

It actually was quieter after a cleanout and fresh gear oil, idled in 4wd without exploding but not taking any chances with more damage.
It's at Offroad Elements getting a 4.56 gear set installed.

No lockers at this time. I had to draw the line somewhere and have something to look forward to next season.

Draw the line elsewhere, you will pay more to wait. All the same stuff has to be done again to get lockers in

Exactly this. You're going to be double paying for everything except the gears (labor included). It might seem spendy to put a locker in now, it's gonna seem WAY worse when you're paying for stuff you just had done to be done again.

Even if you just do the rear, that will take care of 75% of your locker needs
