hows 4 cylinder jeeps

good evening jeep friends what do you think about a 4 cylinder engine 2.5
I have heard stay away but I wonder how bad good it be ?
I would use on weekends and just to wheel .
I found one

the question you’ll have to ask yourself is this, do you want a street rig, or a trail rig. you can run a 4 cyl motor easy enough if you gear appropriately, but you’ll sacrifice road manners. if you want a decent crawl ratio, you won’t be able to do highway speeds, and vice versa. there is only so much torque coming out of the 4 cyl motor, and torque is really the only thing that matters when rock crawling. if you can’t spin the tires, you’ve got nothing. most of our action happens at less then 5 mph. the things you should be looking for are rust, is the frame good? how are the floors? what is the purpose of the jeep?

the 4 cyl motors rarely make enough of a difference fuel economy wise to make it worth the sacrifice of power. continue saving your money and buy and adequately powered vehicle.

Excuse my ignorance here, You said turbo? In 2001 did Jeep make a turbo 2.5, or is this something aftermarket? And if it aftermarket what kind of turbo?

If this is the jeep in Derry it's a cold air intake not turbo.

I disagree , While I dont drive a 4cyl. Plenty do both , daily drive and Wheel. If you re-gear to slightly above stock , to match the tire size it will work. Its not a rocket by any means . You can also look at a 4x1 kit for the transfer case to way increase your low range with out messin with commuting . No one buys a wrangler for gas mileage so I wont discuss it . Like "ISH" said. The TJs had a terrible frame rust issue and I certainly would eye ball the underside very well. Low mileage is good , but the frame is the back bone. There are premade repair patches for this frame if you can weld. There are some in the club that have had frame repairs and they know a garage to do the work. TJs are a great and capable rig. I think its priced a little high for a 4 cyl of that year , but the condition is the deciding factor . Good luck FjR68

My 2.5L seems to do fine.

$7K for a 17 year old potential beat down Jeep is too much, IMO. Especially, with the rear frame rot areas.
I would look for a stock Jeep down south and build it up yourself.

Just saw the turbo thing.

It takes a lot of work to install a turbo on a 2.5L Even the N/A engine in my YJ has a port matched and milled head, modified intake and 4.0L throttle body, Ford injectors and a 4.0L high volume oil pump.

Never mind that the AX5 transmission barely survives behind the 2.5L. You'll have to upgrade the transmission too, and I can tell you that fitting a GM granny low (SM420) behind it wasn't really too hard, but it could be a mission for someone who isn't mechanically inclined.

I would scan that "turbo" install over with a fine tooth comb. If the work looks like hose clamps and cheap exhaust tube, I'd pass.
