Good morning !... I just joined the club and I am prepping my jeep . I have a heavy duty /aftermarket rear bumper with only a 2" hitch receiver. Are the D shackels which attach into the receiver an acceptable rear hitch point ? I do plan on welding some shackle connections left & right side but know that will not happen for a while .

I've been running a single point reciever for a few years. 3/4 shackle. It's worked fine for me.

Which aftermarket bumper do you have? I'm surprised that it doesn't have Shackle mounts, most have them. There is an insert for the 2" receiver that can accept a D-Ring, you should be able to use that, but up to the rules lawyers...

I accept this for a rear tow point. Be sure the post/pin holding it in is secure and has a cotter pin of sorts to ensure it will come loose with all the bouncing around.

If you've got a strap with eyes (no hooks) in your recovery kit (which I believe is a requirement) you don't need the insert. Just run the loop around your hitch pin in the receiver.

I don't know if this covers it for the DOT, but I know it works.

To the strap in the pin, when pulling sideways it's pulling strap across square edge of the hitch that can cut strap. Each there own there needs to be a point where it's not a tow point anymore.

I understand your thinking, definitely. Most of the decent 20K straps have a sheath on the loops and I think it comes down to the application (rear pull vs side). I've used just a 5/8" pin and didn't see any loop degradation. I typically inspect my equipment before and after a run too.
Along your line of thinking though, I only run steel cable in my winch as it (IMO) takes rock abrasion better than synthetic.

All that said, a few bucks for a hitch hook would be better, although it would lessen your departure angle.
