Front Axle Seal Leaking

Unread post by DaveP »

Looks like my front driver axle seal got damaged when my ball joints were replaced. Anyone replaced the inner seals on a JK? What kind of pain am I looking at? I’ve read the write-ups but haven’t done any differential work and don’t know if this is a DIY shop job.

Not too terrible a job to do DIY. A little tedious though. Requires pulling everything on the axle to get the axle shafts out, popping the diff cover, bearing caps and removing the carrier. Then you can remove and replace the bum seal(s). Reassemble and fill.

I did it on my TJ a few months ago after breaking an axle. It wasn't horrible just takes some time. Getting the carrier out and back in was little challenging. Make sure everything goes back together as it came apart.

The carrier bearing caps must go back in exactly as they came out. It's best to mark them which is left, which is right and which ends goes up.
