6 speed rebuild

Reverse barely works on the 6 speed in my pig and I figure I might as well rebuild it while I have everything out. In 2005 jeep put out a TSB for this issue... and the kit is $917! (http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/PENTI ... 6_jeep.pdf) I'm trying to figure out if I can buy just the new shift assembly to save some $ or if I have to go all in to repair this tranny. At that price I might be better off buying a junkyard tranny instead. Am I going to need all of the special tools as well?

call Jeeps unlimited in RI and talk to Ray Moulton. I would hazard a guess he has a 6 speed for you that can be bolted in and you can sell the junk one on Craigslist for some $ back.... He wont likely want the core as he does not do repairs but hes a real nice guy and a straight shooter...

I really like my 6 speed in the JKU better than the AX15... I wouldn't mind one of those in my TJ.
On the other hand the AX15 is cheap and there are a ton of them out there which is a plus....

I have a tranny from my jeep, 2005 LJ, had somewhere around 55k when I took it out. 1-2 was a bit rough but everything else was fine. If you're interested let's talk.

I thought I had read the 6 speeds werent as reliable as the 5 speeds due to case design . Same dimensions , more gears , smaller bearings ? If thats true , I buy one outta a junker and save the money. FjR68

I ended up buying a used tranny and swapping over the shift rail assembly, reverse synchro and collar.



Plastic pads were worn off of the shift rail assembly and the synchro was pretty worn.



Big thank you Mr Klopp for the help! Test shifted on the bench and it was a big difference in reverse. Hopefully it performs as flawlessly once the heep is up and running again!

I heard people talking how one type of oil shifts better than the other. From what Ive heard and read Pennzoil 30wt engine oil seams to protect the yellow metal (syncros) better. FjR68

Reverse works! I don't have to slam it into gear and hold it there anymore. Good enough for me!
