Installing LED door projection lights

Unread post by Mnantel »

I want to install projection lights on the doors of my Sahara. I have them on my E550, and that was an easy install.
They look cool when you open the door and Jeep lights up the ground, but I cannot locate or figure out how the interior lights are activated as I have to tap into that power to turn on the lights. Anyone know?
Thank You

I would think the easiest place would be at the door switch if you have them. Some items are wired hot and when you say , open the door , you are completing the ground. I know my horn is that way. The other way would be at the fuse box. Look for accessory's fuse. Or courtesy . Test one side or the other and then open the door to see if the other side came live. FjR68

No door switch that I could find.
Maybe use the cable plug where you can pull out if you remove the doors?
Will break out the multi-meter and test for ground.
Thank You Frank

The sensor is in the door accuator mechanism and runs through the wire harness in each door. If I'm right, purple and purple/yellow trace is drivers side and purple/white trace - purple/grey trace are the passenger side

I have a 2014 JKU Altitude. I've done a few things to it but it's probably never going to be finished. The more I was thinking about what you were trying to do, it may be easier to tap into the floorboard light that illuminates when you open the door. I think it's a yellow wire. Could be a chance to upgrade those dim bulbs to LED while you're there too.

I do not have floorboard lights. I will be getting the the lights Thursday, so I will take door panel out. Looks easy and look for the wires.
I was think of ordering green LED lights for the interior as the jeep is green.
Just finished installing a Weathertech deflector( that was super easy) and a chrome fuel filler cover. Again, very easy and classy looking . Looks good as I have a lot of chrome .
Will let you know on the projector.

Hey Grumpfish
Got the lights last night, took the door panel off. Easy to do. Located the wires. The dome light is triggered thru the door handle as well as the open door signal on the dash. Well , it turns out that power is on with door closed, powers off with door open, also it is connected thru the interior light dimming switch.. Also thru the slow dimming of the dome light after the time delay.
I know some guys have had the same problem when tying their outside LED lights to the dome light.
Back to square one. Need to figure out maybe using a relay or something.
Will advise on that project. And I thought this would be easy. It sure was on the Mercedes E550 I have.

When you open the door, do you have floor lights that come on? I know in my 2014, I have brighter lights that come on with the door opening, and dimmer lights that stay on when the headlights are on. The door accuator ones are square and are in some kind of plastic housing with what looks like 3-4 wires in some loom.( I just looked) I think I've read before that it's turned on by the yellow wire. If you can side tap it that yellow wire(or whatever one it may be), I think you could run a single tap from it and use that for your feed. It would eliminate the pressure switch on the doors altogether which in turn would still allow door removal. I have to go back into work at 9 tonight, but tomorrow I'll be off and will do some more digging around.

I just looked at the wiring diagram. The "Courtesy Lights" are a yellow/white wire which I did see through the loom. I think that might be your best bet. Run a length of wire with a side tap connector on the yellow/white wire through your firewall hole in the engine compartment and use that as your hot. Do your lights you bought come with connectors that plug into a main hub or are they just fitted with 2 wire tails?
