Stablility Control acting up & steering play
I recently had my lift installed with 35" tires and wheels as well as a fox ats steering stabilizer. They way about 95lbs (wheels and tires) and have been balanced perfectly and everything rides very nice. The new control arms have Johnny Joints at every connection. It also has a slightly sloppy steering now as well tiny bit of play. Could the play be from too high of a setting on the stabilizer? The stability control kicks in sometimes when hitting bumps and stopping. There is no difference in the control or steering with it on or off, no pulling or anything. Anyone experienced anything like this? Is it just what happens with Johnny Joints and big tires/wheels?

Is your steering loose at all? As in wheels straight and you turn your wheel and inch or two and it just feels like loose steering?

Re: Stablility Control acting up & steering play
This might be comparing apples and oranges but after lifting my TJ, my steering went to sh!t. Calling it sloppy was doing it a favor. The whole geometry changed and I (sort of, not really) kind of dialed it back in over time with dropped links and other stuffSpudcannons wrote:I recently had my lift installed with 35" tires and wheels as well as a fox ats steering stabilizer. Sort of, but my stability issue is more commonly referred to as 'death wobble'Spudcannons wrote:The stability control kicks in sometimes when hitting bumps and stopping. Oh you said stability CONTROL My bad
Seriously, glad your lift is in, bet your rig looks all grown up now. I'll let the JK guys give their feedback on what they experienced after lifting their rigs

a bit loose steering, you have to move the wheel a bit before it steers. Staying straight requires some correcting, can't just leave the wheel straight or it will wonder.
The stability program thing you can turn on and off but it didn't happen today at all. Lucky for me no death wobble, no shimmies or shakes all the way up to the fastest i've taken it about 80 mph.

Could be your steering box. I chipped a few teeth on the actual box. Had to beef that up..

Maybe but seems unlikely since I got it from the shop like that. I'll give them a call. I probably should reinforce it.

Question them. I replaced my box and stabilizer after I regeared. Steering is no longer loose, but it's different when turning left vs right

Re: Stablility Control acting up & steering play
Perhaps the wandering is an alignment issue? If it's toe-d out more then spec, it'll have a wandering feel to it. Toe-d in will "dart" around more.

Re: Stablility Control acting up & steering play
I have Johnny joints on all control arms (and track bars) and they aren't the issue. It's worth checking if the links are torqued down sufficiently, but a new Johnny joint should be nice and tight and won't cause any handling issues.

Re: Stablility Control acting up & steering play
I think it is probably the weight of the wheels/tires stressing the steering box mounts and adding frame flex. I added a steering stabilizer to my ram 3500 when it had a similar issue. But I should get the alignment checked again and probably add a JKS brace stabilizer.

Re: Stablility Control acting up & steering play
I run mine around 30psi in a TJ.... I believe your JKU is heavier! So you would need a higher PSI than 26-- no?

Re: Stablility Control acting up & steering play
What sidewall rating are your tires? I run in the mid to high 20s with my jeep on 35s, and it is a heavy pig. E rated sidewalls however.
