Hey All, so my daily driver JKU now has 53K miles on it and the tires are finally shot. I am thinking about some Goodyear Duratrac LT285/70R17, not a huge jump in size over my stock tires but its a DD with 3.73s and the newer penstar.... Anyone know if I will still need a programmer to keep the Jeep from going into limp mode? Also anyone out there run these? I'm not planning to lift this jeep or wheel it, just want to get away from the stock look (famous last words i know... LOL) of course the shocks are probably due so i might do well to get spacer lift with new shocks....

I'm running the Duratrac in that size. No problems so far and I've put about 30K miles on them. Rotate the tires every 5K to 6K and keep JKU aligned and the tires should wear evenly. My road noise is minimal compared to muds and many other aggressive AT. I don't believe your JK will go into limp mode upsizing your 31/32" stock tire to an equivalent 32.8" tire. I was under impression limp mode is more to do with gear ratio since this is programmed by factory for transmission shift points, where as tires are not (could be wrong and hope someone corrects me). I did notice my speed, avg MPG display and estimated miles to empty were off so I purchased an AEV ProCal. After programming speed is accurate and MPG estimate is about equal to manual calc.
Jeff: I know a few people that run duratracs and the biggest complaint is with snow driving. They seam to wear well and arent to noisy , but from the 3 guys they all said they suck in the snow . They all have them on pick-ups which might be different. (4WD) Check around Dude . FjR68
I think they're snowflake rated tires? We sell a good deal of them.
I hear complaints about them having weak sidewalls - off road.
If you wanted a tire recommendation, I'd say Toyo Open Country AT2, Duratracs or Cooper AT3 on a daily driver that is never wheeled, but I would choose the Toyo Open Country M/T for any Jeep.
JK = Computer controlled so much that in the snow you could run bowling balls for tires and it still won't do a donut in a parking lot.
I run Duratracs and had no problems in snow (on road). I just sold by 32" Duratracs and went to 35s. I did have some minor sidewall damage on the last set so they're May be some truth to the sidewall complaints. As far as the programmer goes, the tire size change will affect the odometer and speedometer and your shift points on an auto tranny.
So I finally bit the bullet and got new tires a few weeks ago. Went with the Duralast 285s mentioned above and so far they are pretty good, if nothing else they look great and finally take the stock look away from my jeep. I have only had a few times where I had minor rubbing on the front air dam but other than that they fit fine. have been running around 30-35 psi and the ride still comfortable.
No effect on acceleration with the 3.73 gearing and I think i lost about 1-2mpg at most since moving over. Road noise is not much louder than stock, they are a lot wider than the stock 32" tires but not too much taller and great for a daily driver.
