Imput

Unread post by Frank »

Ive been looking for a different steering column for Mona. To be able to install a smaller diameter steering wheel. Ease of entry and less turns lock to lock. Mostly the speed at which it turns the wheels. Santa brought me a AGR pump and a gift thingy to buy a steering box. QUESTION . Im leaning toward super box 1 which is 12 x 1 ratio. They say short wheel base and interstate driving should get box 2. A variable 13/16 ratio. Im still going to have that BUS size steering wheel which will slow everything down somewhat . I dont do a lot of high way and trailer any big distance. Whats your thoughts on this. I really want to speed things up in the steering department. You da man / and woman ! FjR68

Is your gift thingy just for an AGR box?

I don't have experience with this specific issue, but I don't see a huge problem with going with Box 1. It doesn't sound like this is your daily driver, and even if it was, you would probably be fine. The guy who installed my automatic locker pretty much said the same thing. Not recommended for short wheel base and daily driving, but neither I nor my wife have an issue with it. Yeah, it clicks, jerks, and jumps, but that just adds charm.

Maybe trip on over to NEWJO, and seek out John O. he has had several older Jeeps over the years, and seems to be the go to guy for older Jeep questions and problems.

Thank you. Thats the way Im leaning, box 1. Yes Mike, agr only. looked at PSC also but huge money difference. No its not my DD but I ride her any chance I get ! Like you said , lockers ,lifts, Change to coils from leafs, all change how they drive. I know this and respect her on the road. Thats why Im looking at box 1 to have the best off road steering control. Its more important to me to have faster steering in the woods and Ill deal with her on the road. I even looked at a 79 Monte Carlo SS box was timed to 10 x 1 but the bolt pattern is way different. Thanks all for the input. FjR68

I have no experience with AGR stuff, just PSC.

We're moving away from PSC, though, as we found a BETTER product for a lot less money. They do all kinds of mods to the boxes, but so far we've just done stock replacements and one Rock Crawler box that works off regular XJ power steering pump. It is pre-ported to add ram assist, but can be done at a later date so customers can move at their own pace in steps.

Mike : From what Ive been able to get for info , both Co. build them the same way with different parts. (AGR/PSC) I have no issue with having to use more than a finger to turn the 35s. Its how many times you have to turn it . Just looking to speed things up in the turning dept. I have 10" of stretch so its just about 90" , Whoo Hooo ! Almost a TJ ! Thanks all for the input . FjR68

Frank, in speaking with the sales rep at a company not affiliated with PSC or AGR, 3.5 turns lock to lock is as tight a ratio as you want for safety.
Understanding the bus wheel and corrected wheel base and limited highway use - all things considered.

I'm with you, get the fast box for your off road needs if it is 3.5 turns lock to lock. Ultimately, if you have the ability to make trail steering adjustments quicker, you are safer. Your rig is safer. Variable ratio, IMO and the sales rep, might complicate things. AGR's recommendation for Box 2 is for highway safety.
