Suggestion and opinion
Looking to replace the broken timing chain and gear set. Only found one Co. that makes a double row (true roller) timing chain for her. Your opinion please. Stock chain is about 35-40 buks --- True roller is 150.00. Should be a no brainer but I hate to put in another stock set as this one is only 4 yrs. old and cant have a 1k miles on it. Or do you think it was a fluke ! FjR68

Re: Suggestion and opinion
Yes : Its a 4.2 . It ate up the crank gear and busted the cover. Pulled the pan to get all the missing parts and really want to put it back together , so Im gonna wait a couple days to make up my mind. Its got to be a fluke , a bad chain as all autos ran on them till belts came around. FjR68

Re: Suggestion and opinion
I looked for a true roller timing set for you (quickly) and couldn't find one. I found stock replacement parts, anything you might need to complete the replacement, but not any double or true rollers through regular suppliers I go through all the time.
AMC V8 - yes, but not for the 258.
I've always been a fan of...

This would require some timing cover mods to retain a Torrington Thrust Bearing, but would be damned cool on a 4.2L.

Re: Suggestion and opinion
Well it turns out every timing cover offered is wrong. They bolt on but the timing block is in the wrong place to set the timing for the distributor . I cant just use a different harmonic damper because its keyed differently. I would have to also change the crank. I finally found out that the FjS has the cover Im looking for but nobody remans this. Got to start pickin the bone yards. This shoulda been done by now ! Cloyes makes a double roller chain and gear set. FjR68

I assume you'd need to sign up for a login before being able to post there.

Re: Suggestion and opinion
If you can post your engine year and what it came from, I have a vendor's page opened, looking at their brand new timing chain covers for various 4.2L/258cid applications. These are OEM replacements, and some do specify how the timing marks are set up.
Also, FLuiDampr made timing tapes to adhere onto balancers to correct mismatched pieces. (The diameter of the balancer is needed to order the correct tape. You'd find TDC on your engine, line up zero on the cover marks and put the tape on with zero at zero and set your timing. I always just used white out if I needed to make a new mark on the balancer.

Re: Suggestion and opinion
Its a 1974 CJ-5 4.2/258 . A person from Omix-Ada did research and thought it might be found in a FjS. Wagoneer or truck. The biggest difference is MY timing block is on the flat of the cover above the crank and when mounted the cover is slanted left and the block looks to be at 11:00 over the crank. All the replacement covers have the timing block on the lower right off the cover on a boss. They take a different damper. I cant just use the damper as the crank was also re -keyed to match the change. For me to use degree tape I would have to mount the broken cover to find zero ,then remove damper and cover, install new cover and damper and mark it with the new position and cut a second groove as paint may wear off. If you think you can get one Id appreciate it very much. I will also try to navigate the site. Thanks FjR68

Re: Suggestion and opinion
The listing Ive found is for a 62 to 74 FjS Wagoneer, trucks and some Jeeps. If the timing block is on the flat of the cover it is probably the one I need. Thanks FjR68

Re: Suggestion and opinion
Okay, I only found some that fit some starting in 1974, but none that work on 62-74. I found one with no picture, no application notes, that is an old AMC pn that starts with J, but even Crown doesn't know what it fits. I asked if they could take a photo of it, because they have like 400 in stock. The PN is a total dead end.Frank wrote:The listing Ive found is for a 62 to 74 FjS Wagoneer, trucks and some Jeeps. Re: Suggestion and opinion
On my cover it has a number A M 3218622 . The guy from Omix-Ada referenced the same number but with a 3 at the end. I found one 15 minutes away from me. He wants 75.00 for it and the rest of the engine. Im told its a good core engine so I might buy that and sell the crank and rods for someone to build a stroker. Thanks for all your help. FjR68
