Blown

Unread post by Frank »

So a short story is in order. Seeing a friend I haven't seen in a while was fun . When he asked to get a ride to the store for his women for smokes , I readily agreed ,as it was showtime ! B-sssin on the way , laughin, listening to music, it was great. Leaving the store he comes out and smiles at Mona and hops in. Whats this , the 15th revise? Not sure , lost count. Start driven and he ask what motor is in it now. Proudly--- The same inline 6 it came with ! Dont sound like it. Whack ! Throttle down and away we go. 52 hundred , make the shift , engine dead ! No noises, bangs, pops. Like you shut the key off at max RPM. Towed her home ,tail between legs. Checked her out this mornin and finally new it wasnt any of the fuel injection stuff. Cranks over, not even a hint of start. Test light shows power at distributor but no tach signal. Pulled cap , hit remote, engine cranks rotor dont move. Pulled distributor hit remote, cam dont spin. Bummer ! Pulled front of motor and the timing chain broke a pin , most of the teeth on the crank gear are gone, split the cover. Rotated the cam by wrench and nothing binds. Is there any possibility that no valve to piston contact was made ????? Engine made no noise when it happened, cranked fine again this morning. cam seems to move and you can feel the valve springs. A 4 year old Hyvo chain snapped a pin in the middle. Who carries roller chains for this and does anyone have a timing cover for sale or where to get one ? Moral of the story---- Stop showing off ! Thanks FjR68

:-o Sorry to hear that Frank...

Looks like the same timing cover, sprockets and chains were used from 1972-1990. :)
Check Quadratec, 4WD.com, Rockauto.com, etc.

Cover runs about $44
Chain & Sprocket set about $40

After a bit of Googling it appears the 4.2 is a non-interference engine :banana-guitar:

O>M>G> Kurt you are the best !!!!! I couldnt find that info and once I found the reason I just did normal test. Spun the cam by wrench ,no noise or binding. The crank rotates without binding or noise. I was going to tear her down today , but you just made me a real happy camper. I wouldnt have guessed it was a non-interference motor. Then again, I had the block zero-decked and 60 though off the head deck. Ill put a chain and gear set in it and do a comp test before I rip it down . I looked at Quads mag yesterday and didnt see a cover for the 6 just the 8. I will calll them also. Thanks Dude ! FjR68

Quadratec..

Timing cover http://www.quadratec.com/products/51010_0004.htm

Chain, sprocket & gasket set http://www.quadratec.com/products/51006_0012.htm

Also check with the Crown dealer in Canton. He may have the parts right there or be able to get them in a jiff.

They must have changed where the timing mark block is as mine is on the flat of the cover not the right side. Dont care as long as it fits. Got out of this mess under 150.00 . Thank the big guy ! and Kurt also ! Love you man FjR68
