Found my weird motor noise.
At a few previous runs and at the last G2 run, when I started my rig, I had a funky WA WA WA WA WA WA WA ..... noise until it warmed up. Kinda sounded like my squirrels were mating.....
Well, after some niffty troubleshooting, I found that my distributor bushings had started siezing! I pulled the distributor out and low and behold, I could barely rotate it! Fortunately, like a couple other pack rats in this club, I had a spare from my original 2.5L out in the shed. I threw it in, and no more noise.
It goes to show, that doo-dee happens. Buy an extra shed, and start storing your spare parts.

Man, that ending was disappointing... I was expecting a story where you explained how you disassembled the bearing races using your bare hands, polished the bearings and races with belly button lint and spit (and your bare hands), and then reassembled the parts and it works flawlessly!

Yeah, kind of a lame ending!
Joe, I thought you'd find a link of chain and hammer it into a perfectly sized bushing!
I do have an extra shed for spare parts, it's called the back of my Heep!

Re: Found my weird motor noise.
Sorry about the quick fix guys. I needed my tractor, er...Jeep, for yard work before it rained. I forgot to mention that during the old removal, when the nut broke free, I smacked two knuckles and peeled an inch of skin off my thumb. So, it wasn't a total loss.
I promise to bring the old distributor to work and tear it down for analysis.

Well, I brought the distributor in to work and tore it down. The wiring harness connector is the same, but because this engine is a '95 (my YJ is a '92), the pickup for the CPS has a slightly different design (not as good as my '92, IMO). Apparently, the steel pickup rotor was ever so slightly hitting the plastic retainer that holds the electronics in. Over the course of 45+/- thousand miles, the plastic shavings worked their way into the top of the shaft bushing, causing some binding and loud noise when cold.ZAEDOCK wrote:I promise to bring the old distributor to work and tear it down for analysis.
In a nutshell, I used some emery cloth on the shaft and cleaned the pickup coil and housing and it spins perfectly. I'll reassemble it using some Valvoline synthetic grease when I get home and she'll be ready to be reinstalled this weekend. I can toss my spare back in the shed!
Phew!

Which part of it did you recondition with debris from your belly button and spit?
